Biography of Carol Browner

Carol Browner protected the health of a nation and provided its citizens with fresh air, clean water and safe food. Carol Browner carried the EPA into the 21st Century by partnering with business leaders, community advocates and government officials. Carol Browner redefined the role of EPA administrator. She created groundbreaking alliances with the auto industry and accelerated the clean up of the nation's hazardous waste sites, instituting reforms that made the process faster, fairer, and more efficient Recognizing the connection between a healthy environment and a strong economy, Carol Browner led the fight to redevelop abandoned urban properties. She built bi partisan support for the landmark Food Quality Protection Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act, and created the Office of Children's Health Protection, Office of Environmental Information and Office of Reinvention.

Prior to joining the EPA, Carol Browner served as secretary of Florida's Department of Environmental Regulation. She served as legislative director to Senator Albert Gore, Jr. and served on the staff of Senator Lawton Chiles. Her numerous honors include the American Lung Association's prestigious President's Award, the Advocate for Children Award from the Ambulatory Pediatric Association, the Mother of the Year Award from the National Mother's Day Committee and the Lifetime Environmental Achievement Award from the New York State Bar Association.
