Though his formal education had little to do with film or writing, Bobby Farrelly joined his older, writer brother Peter Farrelly to become one of the top purveyors of comedy. Originally trained in geological engineering, Farrelly came to Hollywood to partner with brother Peter and Bennett Yellin writing screenplays, one of which became the comedy hit "Dumb and Dumber" in 1994. Starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, the film became a box office success and launched both of the Farrelly brothers into viable Hollywood careers. In 1996, they co-directed "Kingpin," which starred Woody Harrelson as a former bowling prodigy who discovers an Amish bowler and expects to make a fortune on him, until they run into an adversary. The brothers surpassed all expectations when they directed their third feature, "There's Something About Mary," in 1998. Along with critical kudos, the film won the New York Film Critics' prize for Best Actress and several MTV Movie Awards. Bobby and Peter returned to their signature style, however, with another Jim Carrey hit in 2000’s “Me, Myself & Irene.” Moving on to their next project, the Farrelly's directed the animation feature “Osmosis Jones” in 2001, and then they directed the teen hit “Shallow Hal.”
