|
The first black General Manager in the history of baseball, Watson has been a champion at all levels of the sport. Most recently, he was the architect of the 2000 U.S Olympic baseball program. Combining the perfect mix of up-and-comers and unheralded veterans, he engineered the team that stunned the world by beating the perennial favorite, Cuba, to capture its first gold medal in Olympic history.
In his first season as General Manager for the New York Yankees in 1996, Watson earned the organization its first World Series since 1978. Proving his managerial mettle, Watson withstood national scrutiny for rebuilding the team from the ground up and was chosen Baseball Executive of the Year in 1996. Based on his foundation, the New York Yankees have gone on to capture three more World Series championships.
Watson reveals his recipe for success in his Survive To Win: The Inspiring Story of One Man Who Overcame Incredible Odds and Came Out a Champion. This memoir tells Watson's incredible story of how a kid from the sandlots of South Central L.A. wound up at the top of the baseball world.
