Barry Levinson Biography

Barry Levinson is an Academy Award-winning director, screenwriter, and producer known for his contributions to American cinema and television. Levinson began his career as a writer for television, later expanding his credits to include work on Mel Brooks' films "Silent Movie" and "High Anxiety," as well as the screenplay for "...And Justice for All," which earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay. He formed a comedy duo with actor Craig T. Nelson and became an Emmy-winning writer for "The Carol Burnett Show" before moving into independent filmmaking.

Levinson launched his directing career with "Diner," for which he also wrote the script, earning an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. This film was the first of four set in Baltimore, reflecting his personal background. He continued to receive recognition with films such as "The Natural," starring Robert Redford; "Young Sherlock Holmes;" "Tin Men;" and the comedy "Good Morning, Vietnam," featuring Robin Williams as a military disc jockey. These projects established Levinson as a filmmaker adept at both character-driven stories and commercial entertainment.

His most commercially and critically successful film, "Rain Man," starred Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise. The film won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and received the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. "Rain Man" grossed more than $500 million and solidified Levinson's reputation among Hollywood directors. He followed this with "Avalon," a family saga about immigrants that earned an Oscar nomination for its screenplay, and "Bugsy," a best-picture nominee starring Warren Beatty as Bugsy Siegel. Levinson also directed "Wag the Dog," a political satire featuring Dustin Hoffman and Robert De Niro, which won the Silver Bear – Special Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Throughout his career, Levinson has received six Academy Award nominations, winning Best Director for "Rain Man," with additional nominations for "...And Justice for All," "Diner," "Avalon," and "Bugsy." He has also earned three Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Director. Levinson was named one of Variety's Billion Dollar Directors and received ShoWest's Director of the Year honor. He was awarded the Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement, the lifetime achievement award from the Writers Guild of America.

Levinson has directed several acclaimed television movies, including "You Don't Know Jack," starring Al Pacino and John Goodman, which received two Emmys and one Golden Globe; "The Wizard of Lies," starring Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer, which was nominated for two Golden Globes and four Emmys; and "Paterno," starring Al Pacino, which was nominated for two Emmys. "The Survivor," which Levinson produced and directed and starred Ben Foster, received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Television Movie. He also returned to documentary with "Bucks County, USA," a five-episode series about two Pennsylvania teenagers navigating political polarization, and directed "The Alto Knights," about Mafia figures Frank Costello and Vito Genovese, both portrayed by Robert De Niro. Levinson's work spans multiple genres and decades, making him a significant figure in film and television direction, screenwriting, and production.
