Alexander Mooney
Alex Mooney is a former Maryland State Senator representing District 3. On December 11, 2010, Mooney was elected as Chair of the Maryland Republican Party.
In college, Mr. Mooney was an active rugby player and was a member of the student board for the CatholicStudentCenter.
From 1993 to 1995, Senator Mooney served as an aide to Western Maryland Congressman Roscoe Bartlett. He then worked as a legislative analyst for the House Republican Conference Committee directed by Congressman John Boehner of Ohio – now the Minority Leader. Senator Mooney later left Capitol Hill to work for a pro-family, conservative educational organization.
In 1998 at the age of 27, Senator Mooney was elected the youngest and only Hispanic member of the Maryland State Senate. After being targeted in redistricting, Senator Mooney was re-elected in 2002 in the most expensive State Senate race in Maryland’s history. He was re-elected again in 2006 and still serves in the State Senate today. The legislature in Maryland is a part time job (session runs January-April). Senator Mooney sits on the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee.
Senator Mooney's mother, the former Lala Suarez, immigrated to the United States from Cuba in 1961 at the age of 21. One of the reasons Senator Mooney is so passionate about political involvement and the importance of freedom of the press and fair and objective media is because of his mother's experience in communist Cuba, where the people have no such freedoms. When not legislating, Senator Mooney also serves as the Executive Director of the NationalJournalismCenter (www.njc.yaf.org).
Senator Mooney is married to Dr. Grace Mooney, a neurosurgeon. They have two children.
