Detailed Biography of Greg Gumbel
|

Greg Gumbel has rejoined CBS as a sports broadcaster. Currently, he is the top play-by-play football announcer for the network, with Phil Simms as his color commentator.
Before joining CBS, Greg Gumbel spent three years with NBC Sports. During his tenure with NBC, he was the host of The NFL On NBC, the network's pre-game, halftime and post-game football show. His extensive work for NBC also included play-by-play on NBA telecasts and NBC's Major League Baseball.
Born in New Orleans in 1946, Greg Gumbel grew up in Chicago and graduated with a B.A. degree in English from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. He takes time out from his sportscasting duties to speak to adult and youth groups. His presentations are both entertaining and motivational, and always include illustrations and anecdotes from the world of sports.
Prior to joining NBC in June 1994, Gumbel spent five years with CBS Sports, serving as primetime anchor of CBS' record-setting broadcast of the 1994 Winter Olympic Games from Lillehammer, Norway, and co-host of CBS' morning coverage of the 1992 Winter Olympics from Albertville, France. His past work covering Olympic events also includes serving as the daytime anchor for NBC's coverage of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta.
In 1990, Greg Gumbel became host of CBS Sports' Emmy award-winning The NFL Today, where he was paired with studio analyst Terry Bradshaw. He was also the co-host with Matt Millen of CBS Radio Sports' weekly show, The NFL Preview, and hosted the radio network's Sunday night and Monday night NFL coverage, and a daily radio sportscast, Sportstime. During his years with CBS Sports, he hosted or called play-by-play for Major League Baseball, the College World Series, NFL and college football, NBA and college basketball, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Philadelphia 76ers and the Seattle Mariners.
Prior to his first period of work with CBS, Gumbel spent three years with Madison Square Garden in New York, winning an Emmy while there. Before going to New York, he spent five and-a-half years with ESPN. He spent more than seven years as a television sports anchor in Chicago before he joined ESPN, winning two local Emmys in the process.
