| Chris Klug came to the wall of the finish area, jumped into the crowd of family and friends, and got hugs all around. His brother Jim handed him a big American Flag on a ski pole, and he held it high as he greeted coaches, well wishers and the press in the finish area. Later on Friday night, he was part of the formal Medal Ceremony in downtown Salt Lake City, again cheered on by his proud family and group of friends, and thousands of cheering Olympic fans surrounding the medals plaza. What a race for Aspen, Colorado's Chris Klug!
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
- Captured the bronze medal in the Giant Slalom event at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.
- U.S. National Champion; 2001.
- Grand Prix Overall Alpine Champion; 2000.
- Has five career top-5 finishes in World Cup competitions.
- First rider named to US Olympic Snowboard Team; 1998.
- Placed 6th in the Giant Slalom event at the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano.
- Won the US Open Slalom; 1997.
OVERCOMING THE ODDS
Diagnosed with a rare liver disease, affecting only one in 10,000, Chris spent almost seven years on the waiting list for a new liver. In July 2000, Chris received a life-saving transplant to rid himself of the same liver disease which killed NFL Hall of Famer Walter Payton. He was back on the podium 5 months later at the World Cup.
“I felt like, OK, now I’m perfectly healthy, I’m back and I want to prove how strong I am.” Chris is the first-ever American to compete in the Olympics with an organ transplant.
