Super Bowl-Winning NFL Coach & Leadership Expert; Retired Head Coach of Baltimore Ravens; Former NFL Analyst
Brian Billick Biography
Brian Billick is recognized in professional football for leading the Baltimore Ravens to their first Super Bowl championship. A graduate of Brigham Young University, Billick played as a tight end for the Cougars, earning All-WAC and honorable mention All-America honors. Although he was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the 11th round of the NFL Draft, Billick did not play in a regular-season NFL game, instead focusing on a coaching career that spanned three decades.
Before joining the Ravens, Billick served as offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings under head coach Dennis Green. During his seven seasons with the Vikings, the team made six playoff appearances and set an NFL record for most points scored in a season, along with a team record for touchdown passes. His performance earned him recognition as the Pro Football Writers Association NFL Assistant Coach of the Year.
Billick became the second head coach in Baltimore Ravens history, succeeding Ted Marchibroda. In his second season, he led the Ravens to a 12-4 record and the franchise's first championship in Super Bowl XXXV with a victory over the New York Giants. While Billick was known for his offensive expertise, the Ravens developed one of the league's top defenses under his leadership, allowing a record-low 165 points and leading the NFL in turnover differential during their championship season. The defense, led by Ray Lewis, is considered among the greatest in NFL history, allowing only one offensive touchdown in the postseason. Billick concluded his tenure with an 85–67 record over nine seasons, including a 5–3 playoff record. Eight of his assistant coaches, including Jack Del Rio, Marvin Lewis, Rex Ryan, Mike Smith, Mike Nolan, Mike Singletary, Mike Pettine, and Vic Fangio, went on to become head coaches in the NFL. Billick also played a key role in the development of Ravens Hall of Famers Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and Jonathan Ogden. He was inducted into the Baltimore Ravens Ring of Honor for his contributions to the organization.
After his coaching career, Billick transitioned to broadcasting, serving as a game day analyst for NFL on Fox and contributing to NFL Network. His broadcasting work included appearances on NFL Network's "The Coaches Show" and "NFL Total Access." Billick also served as an advisor and offensive analyst at Arizona State University and coached Team Kai in the Hula Bowl. In addition to his football and broadcasting work, Billick has co-authored three books: "Competitive Leadership: Twelve Principles for Success," "Finding the Winning Edge," and "More Than a Game: The Glorious Present and Uncertain Future of the NFL." He is active as a public speaker, sharing insights on leadership, team building, and sports strategy, drawing on his extensive experience in the NFL and collegiate football.
