Tony Schumacher won his second NHRA POWERade Series Top Fuel world championship in 2004.He clinched the $400,000 NHRA POWERade Top Fuel season title with a second round win over rival Brandon Bernstein at Maple Grove Raceway.Schumacher took his ninth win of the season and tied Scelzi (2000) and Larry Dixon (2002) for most Top Fuel wins in a season.Schumacher brought Alan Johnson on board mid-season in 2003 to tune the U.S. Army dragster. Prior to joining Schumacher Racing, Johnson's resume included three NHRA Top Fuel world titles, 29 career victories, and 49 career No. 1 qualifying efforts on his resume. In the first race with Johnson on board Schumacher took No. 1 qualifying honors and won the June Route 66 Raceway event. Schumacher went on to win a total of 4 races and five No. 1 qualifying positions, all coming with Johnson, in 2003. In 2002, Tony won two races including the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals for second-time in career and recorded the top speed at six events.Schumacher, who became the first NHRA driver to eclipse the 330-mph barrier (330.23) at Phoenix in 1999, recorded the fastest speed in NHRA history at 333.08 mph at Reading in 2001 and finished in the top 10 for third time in career. Scott Kalitta currently holds the speed record at 333.95 mph.In 2000, Schumacher was forced to sit out two events from injuries suffered in a horrific accident at Memphis. That season Tony advanced to 10 final rounds, winning four of them, and debuted the U.S Army sponsorship at the U.S. Nationals, an event he won. Schumacher won the 1999 Top Fuel World championship driving the Exide sponsored dragster. That season, Schumacher also won his first-ever Top Fuel event. Tony brought on Exide Batteries as his primary sponsor in June of 1998. He made his first final round appearance at the 1996 U.S. Nationals, his first NHRA Top Fuel start. Tony competed in his first NHRA event in 1988, driving a 69 Chevelle in Super Street competition. He competed in NHRA Super Comp in 1992.Tony is the son of Funny Car legend Don Schumacher, his team owner. In his spare time Tony loves to listen to Jimmy Buffett and ride his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. |
