He ended his coaching career in 1995, and began broadcasting the NFL for NBC. Since 1997, he's been part of the cast of pro football experts on the NFL on NBC.
Sam Wyche is considered one of the most innovative coaches in NFL history as well as a master of motivational techniques. A successful NFL coach for 12 years, he was the key to one of the biggest turnarounds in NFL history when the Cincinnati Bengals went from having a record of 4-11 in 1987 to becoming Super Bowl contenders the following year. Prior to joining NBC, Sam coached and played in the NFL for 27 years. He started with the Continental League’s Wheeling Ironmen before becoming one of the original Cincinnati Bengals in 1968. In 1970, he was a quarterback on the Bengals’ first-ever play-off team. He was traded to the Washington Redskins in 1971, playing on three more play-off teams, including Super Bowl VII. He was traded to the Detroit Lions in 1974, and played for the pro football team in St. Louis and the Buffalo Bills before retiring as a player in 1976. Sam began his coaching career with Bill Walsh and the San Francisco 49ers in 1979. He coached quarterback Joe Montana from his rookie year to the 49ers’ first Super Bowl victory in Super Bowl XVI. He was the head coach at Indiana University before taking the same post with the Cincinnati Bengals in 1984. His team played in Super Bowl XXIII against his old team, the 49ers. He ended his coaching career in 1995 after four years as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 1996, Sam was paired with Marv Albert on NBC’s Sunday broadcasts of the AFC. In 1997, he was promoted to NBC’s pre-game and half time shows. He can now be seen as an analyst on CBS with Kevin Harlan on the weekly NFL games. Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Sam earned his BA degree from Furman University and his MBA degree from the University of South Carolina. He has been a private pilot for 27 years and also enjoys golf, tennis, jogging, performing magic tricks, and riding his Harley. He and his wife Jane have been married for 32 years and have two children, Zak and Kerry, and two grandchildren. An accomplished speaker, Sam has learned lessons on the field that can be helpful to everyone. He keeps his audience excited and engaged with his delightful sense of humor and great personal appeal.
