A native of the Bronx, Robert Klein graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School in 1958. He graduated Alfred University with a B.A. in Political Science and History and went on to study drama at Yale. In 1965, he was chosen as a member of the famed "Second City" improvisational troupe in Chicago. This led to numerous roles on Broadway, including "Apple Tree," "Morning, Noon and Night," and "New Faces of 1968." Klein earned a Tony nomination in 1978 for his role in "They're Playing Our Song." In 1993, he won an Obie Award for Performance and The Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor for the role of Merv Kant in Wendy Wasserstein's "The Sisters Rosensweig."
In 1973, Klein released his first album, "Child of the Fifties," which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Comedy Album of the Year. Three albums followed: "Mind Over Matter," also nominated for a Grammy, "New Teeth," and "Let's Not Make Love."
Robert appears regularly on such shows as "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "Late Show with David Letterman" and "Late Night with Conan O'Brien." He has also hosted Saturday Night Live twice, and starred in the 1st of the famous "Cheeseburger" sketches with John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd.
Robert's movie roles include "Hooper," "The Owl and the Pussycat," "Rivals," "The Landlord," "The Bell Jar," "Nobody's Perfekt," "Dangerous Curves," "Tales from the Darkside: The Movie," "Radioland Murders," "Mixed Nuts," "Jeffrey," "One Fine Day," "Next Stop Wonderland," "Suits," "Goosed," "Labor Pains," and "Primary Colors."
From 1986 through 1988, Klein hosted "Robert Klein Time" on the USA Network and received seven Cable Ace nominations. He also hosted "E! Stand-Up Sit-Down Comedy", which appeared on E! Entertainment Channel and "A&E Review" on the Arts & Entertainment Channel. From 1993 through 1996, Robert starred on NBC's "Sisters" as the lovable "Big Al" Barker. He has also guest starred on numerous sitcoms including "Mad About You," "Grace Under Fire," and recently "King of Queens."
In 1975, Robert became the first comedian to appear in concert on HBO in their "On Location" series. He proceeded to record five more concerts for HBO: "Robert Klein: Revisited","Robert Klein at Yale", "Robert Klein: Child of the Fifties, Man of the Eighties, "Robert Klein on Broadway", and "It All Started Here." He is presently working on his seventh HBO special due to premiere in 2000. Several of Robert's articles and book reviews have appeared in the New York Times, and he is presently writing his own book for Simon & Schuster.
