Printable Biography of Kenichi Ohmae

Known as “Mr. Strategy” worldwide, Kenichi Ohmae has an unsurpassed reputation as an advisor on global strategy to foreign governments and scores of multinational corporations. His special area of expertise is formulating creative strategies and developing the organizational concepts to implement them both for private and public sectors. He is the author of over 100 books, including the seminal work, The Mind of the Strategist. His most recent book in English,The Next Global Stage: The Challenges and Opportunities in Our Borderless World,  explores the dynamics of the new “region state,” tomorrow’s most potent economic institution, and offers businesses and governments a practical strategic blueprint for thriving in this new environment. Kenichi Ohmae is the founder and Managing Director of Ohmae & Associates and Chancellor’s Professor of Public Policy at UCLA’s School of Public and Social Research.

In his landmark book, The Mind of the Strategist, Ohmae concentrates on the thought processes behind Japan's successful strategic thinking, describing what strategic thinking is and offering both a conceptual framework and practical advice on its application. The key, he proposes, is integrating the three C's—Customer, Competitor, and Company—in a strategic triangle that can sustain competitive advantage.

Ohmae's groundbreaking bestseller, The Borderless World, identified the key characteristics of top-performing nations and corporations in a world in which national borders are less relevant than ever before. This work builds on his previous argument, in The End of the Nation State, that nation-states have become inefficient, even impossible, business units in the new global economy. His book, The Invisible Continent: Four Strategic Imperatives of the New Economy, describes how coming technological revolutions will impact businesses around the globe.In Triad Power, Ohmae demonstrates why corporations hoping to compete globally must become "insiders" in the “Triad” of Europe, Japan, and the United States.

A partner in McKinsey & Company, Inc. for twenty-three years, Dr. Ohmae cofounded McKinsey’s strategic management practice and directed McKinsey’s Japan and Asia Pacific operations. In 2002, he was named an advisor of Liaoning Province and Tianjin City in China. He is the founder of several successful businesses, including Business Breakthrough (a distance learning platform for management education), EveryD.com (a click-and-mortar grocery delivery platform), and Dalian Neusoft Information Services (a BPO platform for data entry in double-bite languages).

Professor Ohmae holds a number of prestigious positions at universities around the world (see the credentials list below), including that of Chancellor’s Professor of Public Policy at UCLA. He serves on the board of the Center for Advanced Studies Management at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and holds an honorary doctorate from Notre Dame University.

Dr. Ohmae is the founder of Reform of Heisei, a citizen’s movement to promote and catalyze fundamental reform of Japan’s political and administrative systems, and he has published extensively on socio-political issues in Japan.
