Dixie Carter’s has been a public speaker for the National Foundation for Women Legislators. She is a member of the President’s Committee for the Arts and Humanities, the National spokesperson for The Salvation Army, goodwill Ambassador for The Christian Children’s Fund, and is a member of the Tennessee Arts Council. The town of Huntingdon, Tennessee, is building a performing arts center in her name. She is married to actor Hal Holbrook.

Ms. Carter is probably best known for her starring role for seven years on CBS television as Julia Sugarbaker in Designing Women. She has also starred as Randy King on Family Law, her fifth network series. She was last seen on Broadway as Maria Callas in Terrence McNally’s Master Class and more recently as the lead role in Oscar Wilde’s A Woman of No Importance at the Shakespeare Theater in Washington, D. C.

While still in college, Dixie played leads in a dozen musicals at the Memphis Front Street Theater. She returned in 1993 to star as Blanche Dubois in A Streetcar Named Desire. Earlier in her career, she worked largely under the aegis of Joseph Papp at the New York Shakespeare Festival.

Performing her cabaret act at the Café Carlyle every April for ten years, Ms. Carter is now in concerts around the country. A compact disc recording “Dixie Carter Sings John Wallowitch at The Café Carlyle” was released in 1995. Her book, "Trying to Get to Heaven" (Simon and Schuster) was published in 1996, and released in soft cover in 1997. She has also produced two fitness videos for Universal Pictures, “Dixie Carter’s UnWorkout” and “Yoga for You.”
