Billie Moore is the first coach in women's basketball history to lead two different schools to national championships: California State-Fullerton and UCLA. In 1970, her very first season at California State-Fullerton, Moore led her team to the 1970 Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) national title. That victory set the tone for Moore's career. In her eight seasons at Cal State (1969-77), she compiled a remarkable 140-15 record (.903) and coached her teams to eight consecutive conference titles. That mark included national third place finishes in 1972 and 1975 and a fifth-place finish in 1971. The Westmoreland, KS, native continued her coaching successes at UCLA for 16 seasons (1977-93), where she compiled a 296-181 record (.621). Moore led her team to the 1978 AIAW national title and a fourth place finish the following year. Her 1985 and 1992 UCLA teams finished ninth nationally. Moore, who coached Hall of Famers Ann Meyers and Denise Curry at UCLA, became the eighth coach in women's basketball history to reach the 400-win mark. Her overall 24-season record is 436-196 (.690). Most impressively Moore coached the first U.S. Olympic women's basketball team to a silver medal in Montreal in 1976. She was recently inducted as part of the inaugural class of the newly constructed Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, TN. |
