He is a regular commentator on Sunday Morning, 48 Hours, and The CBS Evening News, as well as CBS Sports programs. Before moving to CBS in 1987, he wrote the "About New York" column for The New York Times. Geist received an Emmy Award in 1992 for his report for CBS News on the 66th anniversary of America's famed Route 66. In addition, he has won numerous awards for his work as a humorist. He has contributed pieces to The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, and other publications. Geist is a best selling author. His most recent book (2001) is Fore! Play: The Last American Male Takes up Golf. Among his other recent books is The Big Five Oh!: Fearing, Facing, and Fighting Fifty. A self proclaimed wry curmudgeon on the subject of getting old, Geist writes that Rolling Stones concerts "are beginning to take on the look of aerobic classes at a Century Village retirement community." Among the traumas of turning 50, he writes, was receiving an application to join AARP. Born in Champaign, Illinois, Geist graduated from the University of Missouri with a master's degree in communications. He lives in Ridgewood, New Jersey. |
